Inspirational and informative story of Ruby and Tobys journey from show ring to service dog.

Ruby is the inaugural book in author Jack Heapes new middle-grade series about service dogs, telling the inspirational story of a budding champion show dog and her young handler who discover another calling in their lives as a service dog and a service dog trainer. Readers of all ages will surely find the story informative and heartwarming.

Toby Durham developed a passion for handling dogs in the show ring early and became one of the youngest and most successful handlers in competition. He longs to start and finish his own champion, and he gets that chance with owner/breeder Madeleine Fulbright and a young Irish Setter puppy named Ruby. The story details much of the behind-the-scenes work and commitment involved in pursuing his dream, including the considerations and accommodations his family and parents make to help him realize it.

While this aspect of the plot is awesome on its own, its not the only storyline. When Tobys family moves for his fathers job, one of Tobys new neighbors is Rachel Parker, a girl about his own age who experiences seizures of such an unpredictable nature that she is literally restricted to her own home. A chance meeting and Rubys instinctive actions, which appear to warn Rachel of an impending seizure, changes life for everyone.

Ruby, Toby, and Rachels story is inspirational reading and chock-full of dog care, dog and handler training, and the amazing collaboration between one incredible dog and the humans in her life. I recommend RUBY for readers of middle-grade fiction, especially those who love books about dogs.

At Carrollton Regional Medical Center, our pulmonology team is committed to helping patients breathe better and live better. We spoke with Dr. Ala Nijim, Head of Pulmonology, to learn more about her role, the conditions she treats, and how people can protect their lung health.

What Does the Pulmonology Team at CRMC Do?

How to Help Families with a Child Battling Cancer During the Holidays

For many families, the holidays mean warm meals, laughter and time together. But for hundreds of North Texas parents whose children are fighting cancer, the season can bring unimaginable stress hospital stays, mounting bills, and the heartbreaking question of how to keep the lights on while their child fights for life.

According to Wipe Out Kids Cancer (WOKC), one in three local families with a child battling cancer live at or below the poverty line a reality that becomes even more painful during the holidays.

North Texans can help support local families enduring unimaginable stress this holiday season by providing a gift of $33 or more to WOKC before the end of the year at wokc.org/hope.

When your child is fighting for their life, the last thing a parent should worry about is how to keep food on the table or the electricity turned on, said Kris Cumnock, CEO of Wipe Out Kids Cancer. Hope cant take a holiday it is essential to these families who are living a nightmare.

Through its Family Assistance Program, WOKC provides direct, practical relief to families in crisis. The local non-profit has stepped in to meet urgent, real-world needs this year paying for housing costs, groceries, gas and parking, utilities, hotel stays and even helping a family afford a cap and gown while their high school senior underwent treatment.

But as the cost-of-living rises, the need keeps growing. This season, WOKC is asking the community to come together to support every DFW family battling pediatric cancer. Each donation provides meaningful relief that allows parents to focus on what matters most, their childs recovery.

Weve seen families sleeping in their cars in hospital parking lots, Cumnock said. Our message is simple: hope cant take a holiday. Families shouldnt face cancer or hunger, eviction or isolation, alone during the holidays.

In addition to supporting families in crisis, WOKC provides Buddy Bags to every pediatric cancer patient admitted to a North Texas hospital. Each bag is carefully curated to meet the needs of newly diagnosed kids with cancer and their parent(s). The contents of the bag include toiletries, a cozy blanket pillow, dining gift cards for parents, as well as age-appropriate entertainment items for kids, such as an iPad and wireless headphones so patients can FaceTime friends and family or download schoolwork. Each of the bags 40 items has a specific role in easing the transition from home to hospital.

For over 45 years, WOKC has significantly impacted the pediatric cancer space by funding more than $13 million for innovative and novel childhood cancer research projects. The non-profit invests in cutting-edge pediatric cancer research projects.

Since 1980, Wipe Out Kids Cancer has offered comfort and hope to kids with cancer through support programs serving the entire family and funds innovative research leading to new discoveries and treatments in the fight against pediatric cancer. WOKC approach features three primary initiatives:

WOKC funds national novel pediatric cancer research projects that lead to advancements in treatment outcomes. WOKC has significantly impacted the pediatric cancer space by funding over $13 million in pioneering research. This seed money has yielded more than $32 million in grant money from large cancer organizations like the National Cancer Institute. While WOKC is relentlessly searching for a cure, the significance of increased survival rates, less invasive treatments, and prevention of harmful side effects are also reasons why research is critical.

The Haunting of Emily Grace by Elena Taylor is an exquisitely wrought domestic thriller, a genuine page-turner that I was compelled to read from cover to cover in a single sitting. With its emotionally struggling heroine and the isolated modern mansion built into the cliffs on land that local legend claims is cursed, I was hooked from the start.

Emily Grace Turner, a finish carpenter by trade, is contracted to complete the interior work of the End of the World, the Monks Island home of Cameron and Katrina Lang, both renowned professionals in their fields: he is an engineer with several patents to his name, and she is a famed architect. The house was their grande idée, but Katrina suddenly disappeared, and the home had yet to be completed almost a year later. Emily Grace is the third carpenter hired to follow through on Katrinas unrealized plans after the first had also gone missing and the second had suffered a mysterious on-site accident that prevented him from continuing to work. Having just clawed her way out of a two-year depression after experiencing her own devastating loss, this job is a final lifeline to get her back on her feet, and failure to successfully fulfill the contract is not an option. When Cameron Langs estranged daughter shows up at the house for an unplanned visit, odd interactions with the young woman and bizarre accusations begin to poison Emily Graces relationship with her client and threaten her livelihood.

Emily Grace is such a vulnerable and brittle character, who seems only a breath away from spiraling back into her deep grief. You cant help but feel protective of her and hope for her success and healing. Her need for caffeine leads to a friendship that proves crucial in her healing journey and helps her navigate the emotional chaos she encounters. Juniper is her timely ride or die. Cameron Lang is a wealthy and genius engineer, but rumors among some of the islands full-time residents paint him as a suspect rather than a secondary victim of his wifes suspicious disappearance. Hes also a desperate dad trying to make connections with an adult child hes had little contact with during their lifetime. Chloe is Camerons daughter from a previous short-lived marriage and is a piece of work from the get-go. I couldnt help but wonder what her endgame was from the moment of her arrival, and there were hints sprinkled here and there that had my suspicious nature working overtime.

The author begins building suspense from the start, with Emily Graces uneasy ferry crossing from the mainland to Salish Island. (Besides her recent trauma, she has an absolute phobia of deep water.) Either through interactions with the brooding, wet, and grey, secluded setting or successive surreal episodes with Chloe, the tension continues to mount until I couldnt have put the book down if I had wanted to. What results is a complex tale, with several unexpected and surprise factors impacting the plot, and an exciting rush of an eleventh-hour resolution.

I recommend THE HAUNTING OF EMILY GRACE to readers of modern gothic suspense novels and domestic thrillers.

Patience, preparation, and karma ultimately lead to the showdown between good and evil.

The Boy is a short, gritty Western novella by author Reno Bachman, and it packs a wealth of story and a cinematic atmosphere into its concise pages. Somewhere on the western frontier, a young Black boy, hidden from view, witnesses a white mob erect a cross before his home and set it ablaze. The childs beloved father, widely acknowledged as an accomplished marksman, defends their home, only to be overwhelmed by his attackers and murdered, as the boy is held back from intervening and certain death by an aged stranger. The mob, led by a man named Silas Vane, burns down his home, killing everyone else in the house. The old stranger, a former stagecoach robber turned gold prospector, takes the boy in and teaches him the ways and skills of survival until hes prepared to seek justice for himself and his father.

Readers never know the main protagonists names as they are always referred to as The Boy or The Prospector. The Boy lives a tough life with The Prospector, but he thrives and matures, gifted with the same skills with a gun as his father before him, and as the pair travel, his reputation is made. He is a quiet, dignified, mysterious figure of a man when he catches the eye and affections of a saucy, red-headed white saloon girl in town. The discovery of their liaison is the touchstone for his vengeance.

The story is well-paced and immaculately crafted, with each descriptive word carefully chosen to create clear and evocative images of the settings and action. There is all the grit and sweat and blood and raw emotion of a harsher time, unfiltered by laws or common morality. The author does a great job choreographing the scenes of gunplay, especially during the resulting showdown.

I thoroughly enjoyed every page of this story, leaving me to replay each scene in my head. I recommend THE BOY to readers of Western fiction.

Texas A&M University College of Dentistry in Dallas names two leaders

Dr. Erica Teixeira takes the reins as the leader of comprehensive dentistry at Texas A&M University College of Dentistry. Dr. Fabricio Teixeira is the new leader of endodontics.

Drs. Erica and Fabricio Teixeira joined Texas A&M University College of Dentistry in July in leadership roles. Erica Teixeira takes the leadership reins of comprehensive dentistry and Fabricio Teixeira is the dental colleges new head of endodontics.

Previously, they served as department executive officers of operative dentistry and endodontics, respectively, at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics in Iowa City.

We are fortunate to recruit two outstanding faculty to lead distinct departments at A&M Dentistry, Dr. Lily T. García, dean, said. It is especially true that the timing of having two executive leadership searches for two different department heads the departments of Comprehensive Dentistry and Endodontics created a unique opportunity for both highly-respected faculty leaders.

Erica Teixeira is a third-generation dentist. In her new role, she oversees the education of more than 400 dental students who care for patients under the supervision of licensed faculty. The Department of Comprehensive Dentistry also includes 10 residents in the three-year advanced education program in prosthodontics and three in the advanced education in general dentistry program.

Erica Teixeira plans to collaborate with faculty and staff to strengthen our educational programs, implementing evidence-based practice approaches and innovation. I look forward to serving at Texas A&M University, where so much growth is happening.

The program welcomed 21 new part-time and full-time faculty members, including recent Texas A&M graduates in prosthodontics.

Erica Teixeira replaces Dr. Bernard J. Hennessy, who retired in July.

Comprehensive dentistry focuses on the overall health of a patient, rather than problems as they arise. It includes an examination of the entire mouth, including teeth, gums and supporting structures, to avoid future dental problems and promote long-term oral health.

In addition to her role as department executive officer at Iowa, Erica Teixeira served as an associate professor and was named a professor in 2024. Prior to that, she was an assistant professor at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio for six years.

A fellow of the International College of Dentists, shes an alumna of the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine program. Erica Teixeira also serves on the American Dental Association Council of Scientific Affairs and is vice chair of the ADA Seal committee. Shes president-elect of the Women in Science Network of the International Association for Dental Research, and a CODA site visitor.

Fabricio Teixeira was recruited after an 11-year tenure at Iowa, where he chaired the endodontics department and held the Richard E. Walton Endowed Professorship. He also served as director of the advanced program for more than four years.

Fabricio Teixeira was invited to speak in 2024 at Texas A&Ms Deans Distinguished Lecturer Series in Dallas and visited with García, a colleague from both the UTHSCSA and the University of Iowa. Before his tenure at Iowa, he was an associate professor and residency program director at UTHSCSA, the same school where Fabricio Teixeira earned his endodontic certificate.

Endodontics is a dental specialty dedicated to diagnosing, preventing, and treating diseases of the dental pulp and surrounding tissues. Root canal specialists aim to preserve natural teeth and maintain oral health.

At this stage in my academic career, I seek to work with someone I know and trust, he said. I am confident in Dean Garcías leadership and her ability to advance the school. Having worked with her at two respected institutions, I can attest to her professionalism. I am committed to serving my peers in endodontics and the broader college community.

García became A&Ms 17th dental college dean in October 2022. In addition to hiring the Teixeiras, she recruited new leaders for public health sciences and biomedical sciences over the past year.

Dr. Deborah Foyle has served as interim department head of endodontics since September 2022 and continues in the same role for the periodontics department.

I appreciate Dr. Foyles dedication and her efforts in supporting the department and providing valuable insights into its operations, Fabricio Teixeira said.

The 27-month endodontics certificate program includes eight graduate students. The program is recognized for its research achievements, and Fabricio Teixeira highlighted the strong leadership of Drs. Poorya Jalali, clinical associate professor and program director, and Jordan Schweitzer, clinical associate professor and predoctoral program director.

I am committed to supporting the department and advancing A&Ms presence at national and international forums, he said. We will achieve this together.

Fabricio Teixeira has held several positions with the American Association of Endodontists and serves as secretary of the International Association of Dental Traumatology, also sitting on its board of directors. Hes also a CODA Commissioner and chairs the Endodontics Review Committee.

St. Andrew Methodist Church Concert Series Presents "The Poetry of Psalms" - FREE

St. Andrew Methodist Churchs Chancel Choir along with a professional orchestra will present The Poetry of Psalms, an original 40-minute work by composer Taylor Davis that weaves together Biblical psalms and secular poetry in a powerful musical conversation. The free concert will take place on Sunday, Oct. 19, 3-4 p.m., in the sanctuary of St. Andrew, at 5801 W. Plano, Parkway.

Commissioned by the Texas Master Chorale (TMC) to celebrate their 40th anniversary, the piece received its world premiere in May with TMC and now comes to St. Andrew with Davis conducting and a professional orchestra drawn from across the DFW metroplex.

When TMC asked me to commission this work, I came up with this idea because I find many of the psalms quite poetic, and I thought pairing a few of them with some of my favorite poems would be unique, said Taylor Davis, creative director of traditional worship and music at St. Andrew. The psalms are poetic at heart, but I did not want to just present 45 minutes of sacred text. I wanted to bring in a modern voice something secular but still spiritual, something that might enhance the psalms.

The 40-minute piece consists of a series of musical pairings each one matching a psalm with a poem.

Almost in a call and response way, the texts volley back and forth, said Davis. For example, the Scottish poem As the Rain Hides the Stars paints a picture of trusting what we cannot see, and its complemented by Psalm 8, describing creation with the sun, moon, and stars of night. This is perhaps one of my favorite pairings: the poem sounds like youre watching fireflies after a summer storm, and the psalm about creation is like a confetti cannon!

In another pairing example, Emily Dickinsons Will There Really Be a Morning? is answered when Psalm 113 declares from the rising of the sun to the going down of the same, the Lords name is to be praised, he continued. Each pairing lasts about four minutes with ten total movements inviting the listener on a journey through doubt, wonder, praise, and gratitude.

The psalms can feel sepia-tonedbeautiful, but distant, said Davis. I wanted to add a little technicolor, and these poems do that. They help us see that sacredness isnt locked away in old texts. Its all around usin everyday language, in the natural world, and in the questions we all carry.

This concert is part of a broader effort by St. Andrew to offer meaningful, artistically excellent programming for the wider community. From classical music lovers to curious first-time concertgoers, The Poetry of Psalms aims to be both accessible and profound.

Coppell Cowboys and Cowgirls Battle Weather at Marcus Invitational

The Coppell cross-country teams had the opportunity to race at the Coach T. Marcus Invitational this weekend at North Lakes Park in Denton, the same course where District will be held in October. Running the course early provides valuable experience, but storms forced the cancellation of the JV boys and JV girls races, sidelining about 40 Coppell runners. That left the Varsity squads to lead the way against more than 100 schools, many among the states toughest programs.

Despite the challenging conditions of heat and mud, Coppells Varsity athletes, including Maya Easterwood and Diego Morales, delivered standout performances.

Coachs Highlights on the Cowgirls

In the Elite Varsity Girls race, Coppell finished 13th out of 31 teams. Senior Maya Easterwood dominated from start to finish, winning the race while setting the pace alone at the front. Freshmen Finleigh Sanders-Burk and Rachel Stumm followed as Coppells 2nd and 3rd finishers, both posting mid-19-minute times that exceeded expectations. Anusha Patki and Bishakha Sinha rounded out the top five with strong efforts in their first high school 5K races. Four of Coppells top five finishers were freshmen, a promising sign for the future.

In the Varsity Girls Open division, Coppell placed 29th out of 36 teams. Charlotte Baade led the way for the Cowgirls, with Hannah Stumm and Vanini Agarwal following close behind.

Coachs Highlights on the Cowboys

The Elite Varsity Boys finished 16th out of 43 teams. Senior Diego Morales and sophomore Sam Meier paced Coppell with strong races, while Rohit Kalpathy, Sidharth Kerthipati, and freshman Tyler Kim rounded out the top five. For Kim, it was an impressive debut at the 5K distance.

The Varsity Boys Open team earned Coppells top finish of the day, placing 9th out of 45 squads in a race of 384 runners. Seven Coppell athletes placed in the top 102, led by Itsuki Pena, Vihaan Sahni, Srivanth Rudrangi, Marco Noyola, and Lukas Stumm. Pena and Sahni also ran the 6th and 7th fastest times of all Coppell athletes on the day.

Coachs Perspective

Coach Wren summed up the weekend:

Overall, Im extremely encouraged by what I saw from the athletes that were able to run on Saturday. We have a lot of talented runners that either ran their first 5K ever or their first one in a while. I look forward to continuing to build in practice this week leading up to the Southlake Carroll Invitational next weekend.

Looking Ahead

Next up, Coppell will compete on September 6 at the Southlake 5K Cross Country Invitational. The meet will provide another early-season test for both the Cowboys and Cowgirls as they continue to build experience at the 5K distance. The program will aim to carry its momentum forward and keep improving with each race.

As a contractor serving DallasFort Worth for years, weve had a front-row seat to the regions growth. Lately, that growth has brought both opportunity and challenge: its been especially hard to find qualified plumbersas well as electricians, HVAC technicians, and other skilled tradespeople. And were not alonethis shortage is reshaping how projects are staffed and delivered across North Texas.

A Metro on the Move

The DallasFort WorthArlington metro added 46,800 nonfarm jobs over the past year, one of the fastest gains in the country, with construction growth remaining strong (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). Statewide, Texas recorded its sixth straight month of record-high job counts this summer, underscoring continued demand across sectors including construction (Texas Workforce Commission).

That boom is visible everywherefrom new commercial developments in Frisco and Fort Worth to large-scale restoration and retrofit projects after severe weather. But behind the cranes and concrete is a persistent reality: the crews needed to do the work simply arent keeping up with demand.

Why Workers Are in Short Supply

Hiring challenges are widespread. In recent surveys, a large majority of Texas contractors report difficulty filling hourly craft roles, and many cite schedule impacts from those gaps (Associated General Contractors of America Texas results).
An aging workforce. Many experienced tradespeople are retiring without enough new entrants training to replace them (noted across AGC and state labor updates).
Policy headwinds. Local industry leaders estimate recent immigration enforcement has taken roughly 30% of construction labor out of the Metroplex, tightening supply even further (CBS Texas report and CBS Texas interview).
Awareness and training gaps. For years, high school pathways emphasized four-year degrees over career and technical education, limiting the pipeline into licensed trades.

Local Efforts to Build a Pipeline

The good news: DFW organizations are stepping up. In Fort Worth, a mayor-backed initiative is graduating high schoolers with both diplomas and industry certificationscreating direct routes into in-demand jobs (Axios Dallas / Axios newsletter).

Industry groups are investing too. The TEXO Foundation provides scholarships and outreach to help students enter North Texas construction careers (program overview). The nonprofit CIEF North Texas runs design-build competitions and hands-on workshops that expose teens to real jobsite skills (North Texas Giving Day hub).

Corporate partners are contributing as well. Sams Club committed $1.5 million to Dallas-based Big Thought to expand workforce training for young peoplepart of a broader $3 million initiative (Axios Dallas; Dallas Innovates).

Why It Matters for North Texas

Without enough skilled tradespeople, projects slow down, costs increase, and quality can suffer. In a high-growth region like DFW, thats more than an inconvenienceits a risk to the areas momentum. The skyline tells one story, but the real story is on the ground: recruiting, training, and retaining the people who keep projects moving.

Grandma delights her grandchildren and their friends with enthusiastic attention and by introducing them to her practice of yoga. Grandma is a yogini, another name for a yogi or practitioner of yoga. She engages their imaginations with some simple yoga poses that mimic creatures familiar to the children, such as a butterfly, cat, and even a kangaroo.

To Rescue a Witch by Lisa A. Traugott is an absorbing tale set in 1730s England and Americas Virginia colony, with treachery, betrayal, and revenge all in play because of an aristocrats young illegitimate daughter. Scottish attorney William MacLeod travels from England to Virginia and back again as he seeks to take the girl to her biological father, Lord George Hallewell, her origins and existence steeped in secrets, some of which William himself is responsible.

The story is fast-paced, urged along from multiple points of view, with the main plot narrated through the eyes of William and the traumatized and abused child, Annaliese. The story is often brutal, with repeated incidents of sexual assault and other physical abuses of the young girl. The story is historical fiction about the weak, vulnerable, and powerless at its grittiest. Annaliese is viewed as chattel, no different than livestock, and she grows up knowing only the pain and abuse meted out by her stepfather and his creditors. She is ignorant of how to live in society, struggling with proper language, comportment, or even how to dress herself in the accepted clothing of the day.

Williams wife, Fiona, is home in Scotland, keeping their family and the estate together. Shes a skilled wise woman who works secretly, having promised her husband to refrain from practicing the more magical aspects of her knowledge because witchcraft is illegal. She struggles with visions of the future that are sometimes unclear but always true in the end.

William has his own struggles. He has a dark capacity for violence lurking just under the surface that hes released on several occasions at the behest of his old friend and employer, Lord Hallewell. Hes trained as an attorney and is normally a kind and generous man. These bouts of brutality are constantly at odds with his true nature.

However, William is not the villain of the piece. Besides, Annalieses horrible stepfather is Lady Margaret Hallewell, the wife of Lord George. I found her to be a fascinating and despicable character, scheming and manipulative, using every womanly wile available to gain the advantage over the men in her life, and shell stop at nothing for her revenge, including destroying her husband, William, Fiona, and a little nine-and-a-half-year-old girl.

The story contains vivid descriptions and details of life on land and at sea during this time. To modern eyes, it is dirty, dangerous, and brutal in many ways, but there are glimpses of unimaginable splendor and wealth in the aristocratic circles. The lack of autonomy, freedom, and power is shown in frightening detail with respect to the indentured, enslaved, and married women.

I recommend TO RESCUE A WITCH to readers of historical fiction who like action and adventure and are interested in stories of witchcraft and witch trials.

The third annual IT CAME FROM TEXAS Film Festival, taking place at the Plaza Theatre in Garland, located at 521 W. State Street, showcases a weekend theme of True Texas Tales. The festival kicks off on Friday, Sept. 12, and continues through Sunday, Sept. 14. The fest is sponsored by the City of Garland and Garland Cultural Arts.

Im thrilled that we are playing BERNIE and bringing in the screenwriter, Skip Hollandsworth, to talk about how his original article in T exas M onthly Magazine led to his writing the screenplay with director Richard Linklater, Kitchens said.

And we are ending the festival on our ALAMO Sunday with the fun, silly comedy, VIVA MAX! from 1969. Yes, I know this one isnt based on a true story, but can you imagine a Mexican General coming to retake the Alamo in 1969? That premise is just too funny. "At this year's IT CAME FROM TEXAS, I'll be giving you the deep backstory of how BONNIE AND CLYDE, THE ALAMO and the other films came to be made, the Oscars they won (or probably should have won), the previous and subsequent versions of the stories, and how they essentially rewrote history, for better or worse. There will be lots of cool clips, authoritative guest speakers on each of the subjects, and my personal memories of working on the 2004 version of THE ALAMO, Smith said.

Great start to this new cozy mystery series featuring a retired thriller writer who discovers the body of a real murder victim in the basement of her new bookstore.

Murder on the Books is the first book in veteran author Toni (T.C.) LoTempios excellent new Cozy Bookstore Mystery series and combines many of my favorite cozy mystery themes: a bakery, bookstore, a writer as the amateur sleuth, an engaging store cat, and an initially grumpy potential love interest. When thriller author Charley James, known as CJ Barrett to her leagues of fans, returns to her hometown of Austin, Pennsylvania, shes in dire need of a vacation from her fictional world of intrigue, mystery, and murder. But when she finds out her best friend since childhood has been left high and dry by her new business partner right before the grand opening of her own bakery, she gladly steps into the void to take up the reins of the partners bookstore, which shares the bakerys space (and the expenses). However, before much progress is made toward getting the bookstore ready, Charley discovers the body of Zanes former partner stuffed into the trunk in the bookstore basement; she hadnt left town as her hasty note had indicated. But when the police start eyeing Zane as their best suspect, Charley must put her detective mindset back in place and find the real murderer and clear her friends name.

Charlotte Charley James is the likable main character and a successful novelist going through a spot of writers block. A failed romance on top of her burnout has led her to return to her hometown, hoping the comfortable, familiar surroundings and old friends will heal her soul and rejuvenate her spirit. Naturally, while some things have stayed the same, others have definitely changed, including the transformation of one of her high school classmates from prom queen to local cop and soon-to-be thorn in Charleys side.

The murder is discovered early in the story, so the focus of the book is mainly on the investigation, with world-building happening organically. Officer Barbara Donaldson is not at all secure in her role and compensates with unnecessary power plays directed toward Charley and Zane. The detective-in-charge on loan from Philadelphia, Ian Grant, starts out as a big ol jerk but quickly does an about-face once hes gotten to know Charley better. Even with his rough start, I still rooted for them to develop a relationship.

I loved that Charley blatantly uses the town gossips to obtain information and to catch up on whats going on in their little town. There are few secrets these ladies dont know about, and Austin has the typical small-town vibe where everyone knows you, your family, and what everyone is up to. I also enjoyed the anthropomorphic cat, Poe, and his antics.

The story progresses quickly, and the grand opening deadline is breathing down the womens necks; so much is riding on the businesses proving to be successes and soon. While there are some alternate suspects besides Zane, the resolution may still come as a surprise, and it makes sense. The story was entertaining, the characters engaging, and I was immersed in Charleys debut story from start to finish.

I recommend MURDER ON THE BOOKS to cozy mystery readers, especially those who enjoy bookstore or bakery settings, writers as amateur sleuths, and fun romantic subplots.
