Coppell XC Posts Strong Times in Final Meet Before District

Coppell Cross Country returned to Pike Middle School on Saturday, Oct. 3, to compete in the Byron Nelson Last Minute Meet after rain altered the teams original plans to race at the Jesuit XC Classic.

While many of Coppells runners did not compete, about half of the team took advantage of one final opportunity to race a 5K before the District 7-6A Championship.

Cooler temperatures and rain made for favorable racing conditions, and Coppell finished the meet with 17 season-best or personal-record times.

Varsity Boys

Diego Morales continued his strong return to racing, finishing ninth in the Varsity Boys race with a time of 16:24.

His performance was about 20 seconds faster than the 16:44 he ran on the same course the previous week.

Isaiah Assefa also turned in a strong performance, running 16:41 to finish 14th.

Easterwood Wins Varsity Girls Race

Maya Easterwood led the way for Coppell in the Varsity Girls race, winning in 18:01.

Easterwood finished 25 seconds ahead of the second-place runner in just her second race of the season. After returning to competition last week, she once again looked strong and comfortable on the course.

JV Boys Finish Fourth

The Coppell JV Boys finished fourth as a team.

Baron Schott led the Cowboys with a ninth-place finish, followed closely by Austin Shelby in 10th. Oscar Martin, Alexander Marks and Calvin Wolf rounded out Coppells top five runners.

JV Girls Compete Well

Akshara Darisipudi was the top finisher for the Coppell JV Girls as the Cowgirls competed against a strong field.

For many of Coppells runners, Saturday provided one final chance to race, gain experience and build confidence before championship season begins.

Looking Ahead to District

Coppell now turns its attention to the District 7-6A Championship on Monday, Oct. 12, at Myers Park in McKinney.

After months of training and another week that produced numerous personal and season-best performances, the Cowboys and Cowgirls will spend the coming week preparing for their biggest meet of the season.

The Cowboys and Cowgirls will use the coming week to prepare for District and their return to Myers Park.

Were proud of their efforts, and well keep pushing forward until the next race!

A baffling murder, multiple storylines, and engaging characters make this second in the series a winner!

Hanging By a Thread is the second book in author Dorothy Howell's cozy series, the Sewing Studio Mysteries, and along with the murder of an abhorred local gold digger, there are multiple subplots of interest to unwind. This robust story caught my attention from the start, and I was quickly drawn into life in Hideaway Grove.

The main character, Abbey Chandler, a recent arrival to town after her high-pressure life in LA imploded, is good-hearted and willing to help her friends and business acquaintances out any way she can. She is swamped with work, mostly favors for others, including Janine, the town's flighty tourism manager, as she prepares for an important upcoming women's conference. Meanwhile, Abbey is trying to build her fledgling tote bag business and juggle volunteers for her charitable project making pillowcase dresses for young girls in Africa. It was exhausting, given what she had on her plate, but I could relate to her load, as could many other readers who have pitched in to make things happen.

The murder sets off the small-town gossip mill, and along with the fear of a killer on the loose, local business owners are scrambling, worried the failure of the sheriff to solve the case will impact the lifeblood of the tourist-dependent economy. Abbey's friend and local business owner, Anna, was most often the herald of imminent doom, spreading any and all rumors, no matter how outlandish. It got to the point where Abbey had to talk to her about the impact of her gossip, but someone needed to have an honest "Come to Jesus" with the woman.

The murder victim is a perfect target, almost universally disliked for her well-discussed and dissected shady past behavior. Not a soul sheds a tear on her behalf, and the sheriff appeared to drag his feet on the investigation. Even with Aunt Sarah directly in his sights, he makes zero effort to drag her in for questioning. However, Abbey, believing she needs to solve the crime herself to save Aunt Sarah, puts off talking to her aunt for far too long. Still, I loved where the story goes with the resolution of the murder.

Other intriguing subplots were winners with me and will have me anxiously awaiting future books in the series. Abbey and Zack's relationship teeters between romantic and antagonistic. Props to Abbey for refusing the flowers; she was way more understanding of how Zack spoke to her than I would have been. Caitlin's personal saga will be one to watch, too, with her perceived future and past dreams so at odds, and a third party in the wings with his own unrequited hopes for a future with her. The baffling mystery at the toy shop also makes a great side story, especially given the suspect's lovely reputation and personality. Tidbits about Abbey's projects and business are sprinkled throughout for the craft-minded among us to enjoy.

With multiple storylines and an engaging array of characters, I recommend HANGING BY A THREAD to cozy mystery readers, especially fans of the previous book and those who enjoy craft-themed stories or tales featuring small businesses.

Texas A&M University College of Dentistry in Dallas shares some tips about daily mouthwash

Mouthwash, also called mouthrinse, can be a good boost to a daily oral healthcare routine. While it never replaces daily brushing and flossing, rinsing does reach areas difficult for a toothbrush.

But do you really need mouthwash? Maybe not, said Dr. John Safar, clinical faculty in comprehensive dentistry at Texas A&M University College of Dentistry in Dallas.

Those with excellent oral health dont necessarily need a mouthwash if plaque is well controlled and they have no other oral health issues, he said. But some rinses can help re-mineralize enamel and protect against cavities.

If you are unsure, ask your dentist.

To fight against gingivitis and reduce plaque, choose a therapeutic mouthwash with cetylpyridinium chloride or essential oils; all are chemical compounds that kill bacteria. Its found in many over-the-counter products, but dentists also prescribe mouthwashes with chlorhexidine for bad breath to target the volatile sulfur compounds and to guard against tooth decay.

Dentists can prescribe rinse formulations that ease pain from oral lesions, Safar said. They also suggest hydrogen peroxide to brighten smiles or to mimic saliva to help lubricate oral tissues and improve comfort.

Children under 6 years old shouldnt use mouthwash unless directed by their dentists. Their swallowing reflexes arent fully developed, according to the American Dental Association. A small swig usually isnt a cause for alarm and generally wont bring side effects but seek medical attention if a child drinks a large amount or if youre unsure how much was ingested.

Stay calm and check the bottles label for alcohol, fluoride and antimicrobial ingredients that could irritate small stomachs, Safar said. If your child shows signs of intoxication, is nauseous or drowsy, seek immediate emergency medical treatment.

Alcohol-free rinses also are usually gentler, making them good choices for those with sensitive gums, dry mouths or an aversion to the mouthwash burn.

Mouthwashes with alcohol are usually more effective against oral bacteria. Their essential oils help reduce plaque and gingivitis.

Timing also matters, Safar said.

Avoid using mouthwash immediately after brushing, as it can wash away the protective benefits left behind by your toothpaste, he said. Waiting also ensures that the ingredients in both products dont interfere with each others effectiveness.

Narcissi by Babette Fraser Hale is a novel about a charming Texas travel writer and blocked novelist who finds himself adrift after the 'cut and run' dissolution of his second marriage. Cole Burnett loves people and learning their stories, but he is especially drawn to women, and they're drawn to him. Told as a thread of connected stories beginning in 1980, they trace his wanderings across Texas in search of his next column and through life, connecting with friends, some of them women, who become his lovers.

Cole is a magnet for interesting people, which serves him well as a writer but also distracts him from his career needs and goals. He writes a popular travel column for a statewide magazine, connecting with folks from all walks of life and circumstances. When he finds himself 'cut loose' midlife, he has a wide net of acquaintances to turn to. Still, he is an unsettled wanderer trying to fill an emptiness inside that his steadfast dedication to his career and craft doesn't. Many of his encounters with friends, readers, and subjects of a current project are women who respond to Cole unlike anyone else they've ever met. For the most part, he is not the pursuer but the pursued, and he willingly drifts into relationships, casual in his mind but inspiring unsubstantiated hope in many of his partners. Each one leaves an indelible mark on their beings.

Author Babette Fraser Hale crafts a mesmerizing, immersive story about these lonely people seeking connection, and I couldn't look away from the choices they make. I was completely caught up in Cole's life and the lives of the women in it, thirsty for each new vignette when someone from his past was revisited. The title and the narcissus flowering at the homestead near his country place with Julia felt absolutely perfect.

I recommend NARCISSI to readers of contemporary fiction.

Plano Doctors Prep for World Spine Day 2026, Provide Tips for Better Back Health

Dallas Neurosurgical & Spine doctors Jeremy Denning, MD, and Krishna Satyan, MD, are gearing up for World Spine Day, by providing tips for better back health. World Spine Day, which is observed annually on Oct. 16, aims to raise awareness of spine pain and related conditions.

Back pain is widely reported as the leading global cause of disability and one of the worlds most common medical conditions. Lower back pain alone affects more than 619 million people worldwide, according to the World Health Organization.

These are staggering statistics and something that we want to help change, says Dr. Denning. There are a lot of things that you can do at home to reduce pain and improve back health small changes that can make a big difference.

Dr. Denning and Dr. Satyan are both fellowship-trained and board-certified neurosurgeons in Plano. They agree that one of the most common causes of back pain is also one that can often be addressed at home without medical intervention: poor body mechanics. Body mechanics is the coordinated use of muscles, bones and the nervous system to maintain posture, balance and efficient movement. Improper body mechanics can lead to back pain, stress, stiffness and even chronic conditions such as degenerative arthritis.

Maintaining proper body mechanics is key to maintaining good back health, and body mechanics covers a wide variety of things, notes Dr. Satyan. For example: your sleep position. If you sleep on your stomach, you can cause your neck to twist, straining your neck and musculature. In addition, it can lead to increased strain on your lower back. Instead, try sleeping on your back or your side to keep your spine more aligned.

Another potential body mechanics issue is related to the prolonged use of cell phones, tablets or other handheld electronic devices. This issue affects people of all ages and is becoming more and more prevalent amongst younger generations, says Dr. Satyan.

When we hunch over our electronic devices for extended periods, it puts a lot of pressure on the muscles and ligaments in our necks and backs, which can lead to discomfort, chronic pain and even permanent changes in posture, says Dr. Satyan. Sit or stand up straight and take regular breaks to stretch and move around.

Instead of using handheld electronic devices, whenever possible, Dr. Satyan recommends using a computer. To be most effective, he suggests one that sits on a flat surface with an eye-level screen.

If you have the option, try using an eye-level computer screen, whenever possible. When youre looking straight at the screen instead of down, theres less pressure on your back and neck.

When viewing a computer screen, Dr. Denning recommends changing positions every so often. This will also help improve back health.

If youre sitting at a computer for long periods of time, you need to be able to change positions every so often to help prevent back pain and stiffness, says Dr. Denning. Consider using a Swiss exercise ball, instead of a chair, or try a stand-up desk. If those arent an option for you, then just stand a little more, whenever you can. Once an hour, every hour-and-a-half or so, stand up, stretch and walk around for a minute or two. If you need an excuse for walking around, use that time to get a glass of water. This also helps you to stay hydrated, and proper hydration is one of the most important things you can do for your health.

Dr. Denning explains that while staying hydrated helps with back health and overall health, different people need different amounts of water. When determining how much water to drink, a wide variety of variables need to be carefully considered, such as personal activity levels, weight, existing medical conditions and salt intake.

Staying hydrated helps keep the muscles, organs, joints and even the discs in your back healthier, says Dr. Denning. But different people need different amounts of water to be properly hydrated. You dont want too much or too little you need just the right amount, and the right amount is different for everyone. If you arent sure how much you need, talk with your doctor or nutritionist.

Both doctors agree that dedicating regular time to stretching and exercise can also help ensure better back health.

Exercise strengthens bones and muscles and helps increase blood flow and oxygen throughout your body, including your back. Both core strengthening and cardiovascular exercise are important for maintaining good back health. Focus on the extensor muscles, which are the muscles that hold the body upright, notes Dr. Satyan. Start out small, so you dont overdo it, and consider asking a friend to join you. It can be more fun and help keep you motivated.

For people who arent sure where to start, Dr. Denning recommends neck rolls and shoulder rolls.

Theyre easy to do and can be done virtually anywhere, he says. You can also try side planks or face-down planks. I try to do these in my office in between patients, a few times a day. It doesnt have to take up a lot of your time or be overly involved. Just a little more movement here and there can go a long way toward improving your back health, both short- and long-term.

Coppell Cross-Country Off to a Great Start at Waxahachie!

The Coppell Cowboys and Cowgirls kicked off their cross-country season with a strong showing in Waxahachie on Saturday, August 15. It was the first 5K of the season, and despite the hot August weather, the Waxahachie courseknown for producing fast timesgave the runners a good opportunity to see where their summer training had taken them.

Even without the full team competing, Coppell came away with plenty to celebrate. Both the Varsity and JV Boys won their team divisions, while the Varsity Girls finished 3rd and the JV Girls earned a solid 4th-place finish overall.

With several runners needing more training time and others dealing with injuries, some of Coppell's younger athletes had an early opportunity to step up and compete at the varsity level. Coach Wren was pleased with what he saw from the group in their first 5K of the season.

I was excited to see what many of these younger runners did with that opportunity, Coach Wren said. I was pleased with the way that the runners competed in their first 5K of the season. Im looking forward to watching them grow as runners as the year goes on.

Varsity Boys 1st Place Overall

The Varsity Boys started their season with a team victory, led by Sidharth Kerthipatis 3rd-place finish.

The Varsity Girls also got their season off to a good start with a 3rd-place team finish. Finleigh Sanders-Burk led the group, followed by Rachel Stumm, Bishakha Sinha and Anusha Patki.

The JV Girls finished a respectable 4th overall, with two Coppell runners breaking into the Top 10. Hannah Stumm led the group with an 8th-place finish, followed just six seconds later by Shrriya Bedse in 10th.

For the team, Saturday was about more than where everyone finished. With the full lineup not yet back together, the first meet gave Coach Wren and the runners a chance to see where they are and what they can continue working on in the weeks ahead.

Looking Ahead

Next up, Coppell will trade the traditional 5K for something a little different. The Cowboys and Cowgirls will compete at the Friday Night Hawk Invite, hosted by Hebron at McInnish Park. Instead of another 5K, the runners will take on a 2-mile course under the lights of the baseball and softball fields.

We will be shifting gears a little bit and running a 2-mile course at the Friday Night Hawk Invite hosted by Hebron at McInnish Park this week, Coach Wren said. This is a fun meet that is run underneath the lights of baseball and softball fields. I look forward to seeing our athletes compete again on Friday.

One race is in the books, and there is still a lot of season ahead. With two team wins, solid finishes from the girls and younger runners already stepping up when given the opportunity, Coppell has plenty to build on.

Told through multiple points of view, the young residents of Dipitous Beach face big challenges from both outside their community and inside themselves.

The ugly, black research ship anchored off the shoreline of Dipitous Beach not only mars everyones lovely view of the ocean, but its occupants careless activities below water are destroying the local ecosystem and drawing sharks to the perfect surf spot. While the residents grumble, so far, they have been unable to halt the operations that are more geared toward making a profit than adding to the knowledge of the ocean. In addition, newcomers to the area, drawn by the expensive new housing development under construction and the massive new marina, are racing speedboats through the surf, oblivious to the damage they are causing in the local sea turtle habitat. Author Kellye Abernathy continues the stories of the families in the small coastal town: Condi Bloom, Grand Ella, and their fosters: Firth, Cissy, and Malcolm; Tad, Cara, Lorelei, and Gabby Finch; Abe and Isaac Huddleston; the Arondales; Kait Dooley; Andy Marshall; Trippy; and the rest of the Beachlings. The story is about discovering ones heart, living your own life and not someone elses dream; releasing false memories; learning to establish boundaries that respect how you will be treated by others; and letting go of and healing from the past to move on to a happier future. This story explores the pursuit of knowledge and profit and how it must be balanced with preserving the environment and adding to the greater good. All these important concepts are delivered in a gripping seaside tale, with magical underwater adventures.

I loved the northern California coastal setting, which the author makes so broodingly atmospheric and filled with dark, hidden dangers on the surface, while another light and color-filled world exists just below. The young characters are well-drawn, engaging, and it was easy to connect with their emotional and physical dilemmas. My favorite character remains Condi Bloom, and I already know that her frightening journey through the sea caves with Firth is going to stay with me for a long time.

While this book can be read as a standalone, the histories of the main characters are deep and complex, with the backstories presented in this book only touching the surface. I feel that this book would best be enjoyed after having read the previous novels in the series. I recommend INDIGO, THE DEEP and the rest of the YELLOW COTTAGE STORIES to readers of middle-grade fantasy.

Meridia gets to meet and spend time with her interdimensional self, who in this iteration is a married mother of two with a degree in mechanical engineering and a genius for designing and building futuristic automobiles from scratch. Bridgeway Meridia feels the emotional pangs of her pending divorce and the miscarriage she suffered in her own dimension and timeline, as she gets to know the children of her New Earth counterpart.

This story is a wonderful mix of action, adventure, political machinations, personal development, and personal crises, with characters who feel like friends. As it is a continuation of the Bridgeways ongoing trials, it is best read after completing the previous two novels in the series. I recommend THE DYSON BRIDGE series to science fiction readers with a preference for space opera action/adventure style storylines.

The Bone Nest is a suspenseful and cleverly plotted murder mystery by Shanessa Gluhm and set in Blusummer, Texas, where almost 40 years earlier, a serial killer had committed a string of murders of young local women, strangled and photographed, the bodies of the first three never found. That summer was the last one that Hayes Sheridan, Chantilly Price, Troy Terrell, and Greer Collins would have together before the four split up to follow their post-graduation college and work plans. But the 4^th of July would see the group destroyed as one would die and another would be accused of murder.

Fast-forward to 2024, where a young criminal defense attorney, Joaquin Ramos, out to enervate his new practice and make a name for himself, would take on the death sentence case of Troy Terrell, the convicted serial killer known as "The Songbird Strangler," whose punishment was scheduled to be carried out after the New Year. Working to overturn Troy's conviction at the behest of the Death Penalty Abolition Program, Joaquin and his team have an uphill battle as the previous petitions on Troy's behalf have failed.

The story unfolds in dual timelines (1986 and 2024) and from multiple points of view, giving readers a front-row seat to the events of both the past and the present, and personal insight into the characters involved. Because we know Troy Terrell is on death row, with his time running, and that he was there for the murder of his friend, Tilly, the buildup to the night of July 4, 1986, is breath-stealingly suspenseful. There are secrets among all the friends, which develop later into several plausible motives for Tilly's murder. I was completely certain I knew who the killer was SEVERAL times, only to have one theory after another kicked to the curb by the plot, which would take spectacular turn after spectacular turn.

The resulting tale is full of missed connections and choices that led to unfulfilled dreams and futures that never lived up to expectations. The main female character, Greer Collins Sheridan, one of the four teenagers in 1986, had loved Hayes Sheridan all her life but only got him by default. She gets the life she dreamed of, only to face tragedy and the knowledge that she was always his second choice. Hayes follows his parents' plans for his future rather than his dream of becoming a farmer. Troy, who just wanted to get out of Blusummer, gets his wish, but life on death row for a murder he swears he didn't commit was a devastatingly cruel plot twist. Even the attorney, Joaquin, who dreams of winning big in court and is not afraid to put in the work to achieve it, faces a personal roadblock. His attraction to Melrose Reed, the paralegal on Troy's defense team, feels wrong, and as her boss, it is inappropriate as long as they work together. But he hopes with all his heart that after the case is settled, he can finally approach her as a regular man interested in a legitimate romantic relationship.

With its strong and interesting character development and clever, twisty plot, I recommend THE BONE NEST to readers of suspense, mysteries, and thrillers.

Ruby is the inaugural book in author Jack Heapes new middle-grade series about service dogs, telling the inspirational story of a budding champion show dog and her young handler who discover another calling in their lives as a service dog and a service dog trainer. Readers of all ages will surely find the story informative and heartwarming.

Toby Durham developed a passion for handling dogs in the show ring early and became one of the youngest and most successful handlers in competition. He longs to start and finish his own champion, and he gets that chance with owner/breeder Madeleine Fulbright and a young Irish Setter puppy named Ruby. The story details much of the behind-the-scenes work and commitment involved in pursuing his dream, including the considerations and accommodations his family and parents make to help him realize it.

While this aspect of the plot is awesome on its own, its not the only storyline. When Tobys family moves for his fathers job, one of Tobys new neighbors is Rachel Parker, a girl about his own age who experiences seizures of such an unpredictable nature that she is literally restricted to her own home. A chance meeting and Rubys instinctive actions, which appear to warn Rachel of an impending seizure, changes life for everyone.

Ruby, Toby, and Rachels story is inspirational reading and chock-full of dog care, dog and handler training, and the amazing collaboration between one incredible dog and the humans in her life. I recommend RUBY for readers of middle-grade fiction, especially those who love books about dogs.

For many families, the holidays mean warm meals, laughter and time together. But for hundreds of North Texas parents whose children are fighting cancer, the season can bring unimaginable stress hospital stays, mounting bills, and the heartbreaking question of how to keep the lights on while their child fights for life.

According to Wipe Out Kids Cancer (WOKC), one in three local families with a child battling cancer live at or below the poverty line a reality that becomes even more painful during the holidays.

North Texans can help support local families enduring unimaginable stress this holiday season by providing a gift of $33 or more to WOKC before the end of the year at wokc.org/hope.

When your child is fighting for their life, the last thing a parent should worry about is how to keep food on the table or the electricity turned on, said Kris Cumnock, CEO of Wipe Out Kids Cancer. Hope cant take a holiday it is essential to these families who are living a nightmare.

Through its Family Assistance Program, WOKC provides direct, practical relief to families in crisis. The local non-profit has stepped in to meet urgent, real-world needs this year paying for housing costs, groceries, gas and parking, utilities, hotel stays and even helping a family afford a cap and gown while their high school senior underwent treatment.

But as the cost-of-living rises, the need keeps growing. This season, WOKC is asking the community to come together to support every DFW family battling pediatric cancer. Each donation provides meaningful relief that allows parents to focus on what matters most, their childs recovery.

In addition to supporting families in crisis, WOKC provides Buddy Bags to every pediatric cancer patient admitted to a North Texas hospital. Each bag is carefully curated to meet the needs of newly diagnosed kids with cancer and their parent(s). The contents of the bag include toiletries, a cozy blanket pillow, dining gift cards for parents, as well as age-appropriate entertainment items for kids, such as an iPad and wireless headphones so patients can FaceTime friends and family or download schoolwork. Each of the bags 40 items has a specific role in easing the transition from home to hospital.

For over 45 years, WOKC has significantly impacted the pediatric cancer space by funding more than $13 million for innovative and novel childhood cancer research projects. The non-profit invests in cutting-edge pediatric cancer research projects.

Since 1980, Wipe Out Kids Cancer has offered comfort and hope to kids with cancer through support programs serving the entire family and funds innovative research leading to new discoveries and treatments in the fight against pediatric cancer. WOKC approach features three primary initiatives:

WOKC funds national novel pediatric cancer research projects that lead to advancements in treatment outcomes. The Haunting of Emily Grace by Elena Taylor is an exquisitely wrought domestic thriller, a genuine page-turner that I was compelled to read from cover to cover in a single sitting. With its emotionally struggling heroine and the isolated modern mansion built into the cliffs on land that local legend claims is cursed, I was hooked from the start.

Emily Grace Turner, a finish carpenter by trade, is contracted to complete the interior work of the End of the World, the Monks Island home of Cameron and Katrina Lang, both renowned professionals in their fields: he is an engineer with several patents to his name, and she is a famed architect. The house was their grande idée, but Katrina suddenly disappeared, and the home had yet to be completed almost a year later. Emily Grace is the third carpenter hired to follow through on Katrinas unrealized plans after the first had also gone missing and the second had suffered a mysterious on-site accident that prevented him from continuing to work. Having just clawed her way out of a two-year depression after experiencing her own devastating loss, this job is a final lifeline to get her back on her feet, and failure to successfully fulfill the contract is not an option. When Cameron Langs estranged daughter shows up at the house for an unplanned visit, odd interactions with the young woman and bizarre accusations begin to poison Emily Graces relationship with her client and threaten her livelihood.

Emily Grace is such a vulnerable and brittle character, who seems only a breath away from spiraling back into her deep grief. You cant help but feel protective of her and hope for her success and healing. Her need for caffeine leads to a friendship that proves crucial in her healing journey and helps her navigate the emotional chaos she encounters. Juniper is her timely ride or die. Cameron Lang is a wealthy and genius engineer, but rumors among some of the islands full-time residents paint him as a suspect rather than a secondary victim of his wifes suspicious disappearance. Hes also a desperate dad trying to make connections with an adult child hes had little contact with during their lifetime. Chloe is Camerons daughter from a previous short-lived marriage and is a piece of work from the get-go. I couldnt help but wonder what her endgame was from the moment of her arrival, and there were hints sprinkled here and there that had my suspicious nature working overtime.

The author begins building suspense from the start, with Emily Graces uneasy ferry crossing from the mainland to Salish Island. (Besides her recent trauma, she has an absolute phobia of deep water.) Either through interactions with the brooding, wet, and grey, secluded setting or successive surreal episodes with Chloe, the tension continues to mount until I couldnt have put the book down if I had wanted to. What results is a complex tale, with several unexpected and surprise factors impacting the plot, and an exciting rush of an eleventh-hour resolution.

I recommend THE HAUNTING OF EMILY GRACE to readers of modern gothic suspense novels and domestic thrillers.

Patience, preparation, and karma ultimately lead to the showdown between good and evil.

The Boy is a short, gritty Western novella by author Reno Bachman, and it packs a wealth of story and a cinematic atmosphere into its concise pages. Somewhere on the western frontier, a young Black boy, hidden from view, witnesses a white mob erect a cross before his home and set it ablaze. The childs beloved father, widely acknowledged as an accomplished marksman, defends their home, only to be overwhelmed by his attackers and murdered, as the boy is held back from intervening and certain death by an aged stranger. The mob, led by a man named Silas Vane, burns down his home, killing everyone else in the house. The old stranger, a former stagecoach robber turned gold prospector, takes the boy in and teaches him the ways and skills of survival until hes prepared to seek justice for himself and his father.

Readers never know the main protagonists names as they are always referred to as The Boy or The Prospector. The Boy lives a tough life with The Prospector, but he thrives and matures, gifted with the same skills with a gun as his father before him, and as the pair travel, his reputation is made. He is a quiet, dignified, mysterious figure of a man when he catches the eye and affections of a saucy, red-headed white saloon girl in town. The discovery of their liaison is the touchstone for his vengeance.

The story is well-paced and immaculately crafted, with each descriptive word carefully chosen to create clear and evocative images of the settings and action. There is all the grit and sweat and blood and raw emotion of a harsher time, unfiltered by laws or common morality. The author does a great job choreographing the scenes of gunplay, especially during the resulting showdown.

I thoroughly enjoyed every page of this story, leaving me to replay each scene in my head. I recommend THE BOY to readers of Western fiction.

Dr. Erica Teixeira takes the reins as the leader of comprehensive dentistry at Texas A&M University College of Dentistry. Dr. Fabricio Teixeira is the new leader of endodontics.

Drs. Erica and Fabricio Teixeira joined Texas A&M University College of Dentistry in July in leadership roles. Erica Teixeira takes the leadership reins of comprehensive dentistry and Fabricio Teixeira is the dental colleges new head of endodontics.

Previously, they served as department executive officers of operative dentistry and endodontics, respectively, at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics in Iowa City.

We are fortunate to recruit two outstanding faculty to lead distinct departments at A&M Dentistry, Dr. Lily T. García, dean, said. It is especially true that the timing of having two executive leadership searches for two different department heads the departments of Comprehensive Dentistry and Endodontics created a unique opportunity for both highly-respected faculty leaders.

Erica Teixeira is a third-generation dentist. In her new role, she oversees the education of more than 400 dental students who care for patients under the supervision of licensed faculty. The Department of Comprehensive Dentistry also includes 10 residents in the three-year advanced education program in prosthodontics and three in the advanced education in general dentistry program.

Erica Teixeira also serves on the American Dental Association Council of Scientific Affairs and is vice chair of the ADA Seal committee. Fabricio Teixeira was recruited after an 11-year tenure at Iowa, where he chaired the endodontics department and held the Richard E. Walton Endowed Professorship. He also served as director of the advanced program for more than four years.

Fabricio Teixeira was invited to speak in 2024 at Texas A&Ms Deans Distinguished Lecturer Series in Dallas and visited with García, a colleague from both the UTHSCSA and the University of Iowa. Before his tenure at Iowa, he was an associate professor and residency program director at UTHSCSA, the same school where Fabricio Teixeira earned his endodontic certificate.

Dr. Deborah Foyle has served as interim department head of endodontics since September 2022 and continues in the same role for the periodontics department.

The 27-month endodontics certificate program includes eight graduate students. The program is recognized for its research achievements, and Fabricio Teixeira highlighted the strong leadership of Drs. Poorya Jalali, clinical associate professor and program director, and Jordan Schweitzer, clinical associate professor and predoctoral program director.

Bluebonnet and Fall Native Wildflower Mix Seed Now Available

The Collin County Soil & Water Conservation District is sponsoring a fall wildflower planting program during September and October. One-pound bags of Texas Bluebonnet seed are available for purchase for $55 per pound. One-pound bags of Fall Texas native wildflower mix are available for $30 per pound and contain over 20 different varieties, including Back-eyed Susan, coneflowers, Showy Evening Primrose, Indian Blanket, milkweeds and Mexican Hat.

Native flowers require less water and maintenance than conventional landscaping flowers and plants and can better withstand our sometimes extreme Texas climate. Wildflowers also add beauty to the landscape and provide food for wildlife. The Collin County SWCD uses funds raised from projects such as this to support local conservation programs and education within the District.
