It was the first 5K of the season, and despite the hot August weather, the Waxahachie courseknown for producing fast timesgave the runners a good opportunity to see where their summer training had taken them.

Even without the full team competing, Coppell came away with plenty to celebrate. Both the Varsity and JV Boys won their team divisions, while the Varsity Girls finished 3rd and the JV Girls earned a solid 4th-place finish overall.

With several runners needing more training time and others dealing with injuries, some of Coppell's younger athletes had an early opportunity to step up and compete at the varsity level. Coach Wren was pleased with what he saw from the group in their first 5K of the season.

I was excited to see what many of these younger runners did with that opportunity, Coach Wren said. I was pleased with the way that the runners competed in their first 5K of the season. Im looking forward to watching them grow as runners as the year goes on.

Individual and Team Highlights

Varsity Boys 1st Place Overall

The Varsity Boys started their season with a team victory, led by Sidharth Kerthipatis 3rd-place finish.

Top Performers:

Sidharth Kerthipati 3rd, 14:44

Tanish Neelapu 9th, 15:15

Samuel Meier 11th, 15:31

Alesh Khowala 21st, 15:48

Vihaan Sahni 34th, 16:10

It was a good opening race for the boys, especially with Coppell not yet competing with its full lineup. The team still found a way to come away with the win while giving several runners valuable early-season racing experience.

Varsity Girls 3rd Place Overall

The Varsity Girls also got their season off to a good start with a 3rd-place team finish. Finleigh Sanders-Burk led the group, followed by Rachel Stumm, Bishakha Sinha and Anusha Patki.

Top Performers:

Finleigh Sanders-Burk 22nd, 19:11

Rachel Stumm 29th, 19:38

Bishakha Sinha 32nd, 19:46

Anusha Patki 34th, 19:50

With some younger runners getting an opportunity to compete at the varsity level, this first meet gave the girls a good starting point for the season ahead.

JV Boys 1st Place Overall

The JV Boys made it two team victories for Coppell. Isaiah Assefa led the way by winning the race, with Rigved Nehere joining him near the front in 3rd place.

Top Performers:

Isaiah Assefa 1st, 16:30

Rigved Nehere 3rd, 16:45

Ahan Kolthalkar 10th, 17:17

Colten Karstendiek 12th, 17:25

Lukas Stumm 15th, 17:28

Five Coppell runners finished in the Top 15, giving the JV Boys plenty to be happy about after their first race of the year.

JV Girls 4th Place Overall

The JV Girls finished a respectable 4th overall, with two Coppell runners breaking into the Top 10. Hannah Stumm led the group with an 8th-place finish, followed just six seconds later by Shrriya Bedse in 10th.

Top Performers:

Hannah Stumm 8th, 21:33

Shrriya Bedse 10th, 21:39

Avery Fishman 23rd, 22:37

Pragna Vykuntam 38th, 23:16

Anandi Dhuipalla 39th, 23:17

Coach Wren also recognized several other runners who had good races on Saturday, including Charlotte Baade, Avery Arthur, Mirabelle Sagel, Cannon Stehly and Vihaan Sharma.

For the team, Saturday was about more than where everyone finished. With the full lineup not yet back together, the first meet gave Coach Wren and the runners a chance to see where they are and what they can continue working on in the weeks ahead.

Looking Ahead

Next up, Coppell will trade the traditional 5K for something a little different. The Cowboys and Cowgirls will compete at the Friday Night Hawk Invite, hosted by Hebron at McInnish Park. Instead of another 5K, the runners will take on a 2-mile course under the lights of the baseball and softball fields.

We will be shifting gears a little bit and running a 2-mile course at the Friday Night Hawk Invite hosted by Hebron at McInnish Park this week, Coach Wren said. This is a fun meet that is run underneath the lights of baseball and softball fields. I look forward to seeing our athletes compete again on Friday.

One race is in the books, and there is still a lot of season ahead. With two team wins, solid finishes from the girls and younger runners already stepping up when given the opportunity, Coppell has plenty to build on.

Were proud of their efforts, and well keep pushing forward until the next race!

by

Kellye Armstrong

Return to Dipitous Beach and surrender to the pull of the Autumn Equinox.

Indigo, The Deep is the third book in author Kellye Abernathys magical middle-grade fantasy series, the Yellow Cottage Stories, and there is excitement and self-understanding throughout as the storylines established in the previous novels come together. Told through multiple points of view, the young residents of Dipitous Beach face big challenges from both outside their community and inside themselves.

The ugly, black research ship anchored off the shoreline of Dipitous Beach not only mars everyones lovely view of the ocean, but its occupants careless activities below water are destroying the local ecosystem and drawing sharks to the perfect surf spot. While the residents grumble, so far, they have been unable to halt the operations that are more geared toward making a profit than adding to the knowledge of the ocean. In addition, newcomers to the area, drawn by the expensive new housing development under construction and the massive new marina, are racing speedboats through the surf, oblivious to the damage they are causing in the local sea turtle habitat. Then, too, the autumn equinox brings its own changes to the ocean. In the previous two years, the ocean has revealed its magical secrets to one young resident, and Condi and Isaac wonder who will be next?

Author Kellye Abernathy continues the stories of the families in the small coastal town: Condi Bloom, Grand Ella, and their fosters: Firth, Cissy, and Malcolm; Tad, Cara, Lorelei, and Gabby Finch; Abe and Isaac Huddleston; the Arondales; Kait Dooley; Andy Marshall; Trippy; and the rest of the Beachlings. The story is about discovering ones heart, living your own life and not someone elses dream; releasing false memories; learning to establish boundaries that respect how you will be treated by others; and letting go of and healing from the past to move on to a happier future. This story explores the pursuit of knowledge and profit and how it must be balanced with preserving the environment and adding to the greater good. All these important concepts are delivered in a gripping seaside tale, with magical underwater adventures.

I loved the northern California coastal setting, which the author makes so broodingly atmospheric and filled with dark, hidden dangers on the surface, while another light and color-filled world exists just below. The young characters are well-drawn, engaging, and it was easy to connect with their emotional and physical dilemmas. My favorite character remains Condi Bloom, and I already know that her frightening journey through the sea caves with Firth is going to stay with me for a long time.

While this book can be read as a standalone, the histories of the main characters are deep and complex, with the backstories presented in this book only touching the surface. I feel that this book would best be enjoyed after having read the previous novels in the series. I recommend INDIGO, THE DEEP and the rest of the YELLOW COTTAGE STORIES to readers of middle-grade fantasy.

I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving an Advance Review Copy from the author through Lone Star Literary Life Book Campaigns.

Legacy West Toasts National Tequila Day with Signature Cocktails and Weekend Festivities

Tequila is calling, and Legacy West is answering!
Its a race to save New Earth as the Bridgeway Space Stations orbital decay accelerates.

The Engine in the Sky is the third episode of author V.G. Harrisons exciting Dyson Bridge series and the continuing adventures of Dr. Meridia Vail and the crew of the ill-fated Bridgeway Space Station that was blasted from its own dimension into that of a similar but less advanced version of their Earth. Five years have passed, and the stations orbit around New Earth has begun to decay at an accelerated rate, threatening the planets very existence. With the countries of New Earth all vying for the advanced knowledge and technology the crew and equipment represent, Meridia and her colleagues race to regain control and prevent their misuse. However, their long sojourn in seclusion on the planet has had unexpected ramifications for their health, and many of the accidental interdimensional space travelers are dying. Their only cure may be to return to the Bridgeway as soon as possible.

This latest installment of the Dyson Bridge series follows the crews desperate efforts to return to the space station and keep the New Earthers from taking their technology for nefarious purposes. Meridia gets to meet and spend time with her interdimensional self, who in this iteration is a married mother of two with a degree in mechanical engineering and a genius for designing and building futuristic automobiles from scratch. Bridgeway Meridia feels the emotional pangs of her pending divorce and the miscarriage she suffered in her own dimension and timeline, as she gets to know the children of her New Earth counterpart.

This story is a wonderful mix of action, adventure, political machinations, personal development, and personal crises, with characters who feel like friends. As it is a continuation of the Bridgeways ongoing trials, it is best read after completing the previous two novels in the series. I recommend THE DYSON BRIDGE series to science fiction readers with a preference for space opera action/adventure style storylines.

by

Shanessa Gluhm

It was their final summer together, and nothing would ever be the same.

The Bone Nest is a suspenseful and cleverly plotted murder mystery by Shanessa Gluhm and set in Blusummer, Texas, where almost 40 years earlier, a serial killer had committed a string of murders of young local women, strangled and photographed, the bodies of the first three never found. That summer was the last one that Hayes Sheridan, Chantilly Price, Troy Terrell, and Greer Collins would have together before the four split up to follow their post-graduation college and work plans. But the 4th of July would see the group destroyed as one would die and another would be accused of murder.

Fast-forward to 2024, where a young criminal defense attorney, Joaquin Ramos, out to enervate his new practice and make a name for himself, would take on the death sentence case of Troy Terrell, the convicted serial killer known as "The Songbird Strangler," whose punishment was scheduled to be carried out after the New Year. Working to overturn Troy's conviction at the behest of the Death Penalty Abolition Program, Joaquin and his team have an uphill battle as the previous petitions on Troy's behalf have failed.

The story unfolds in dual timelines (1986 and 2024) and from multiple points of view, giving readers a front-row seat to the events of both the past and the present, and personal insight into the characters involved. Because we know Troy Terrell is on death row, with his time running, and that he was there for the murder of his friend, Tilly, the buildup to the night of July 4, 1986, is breath-stealingly suspenseful. There are secrets among all the friends, which develop later into several plausible motives for Tilly's murder. I was completely certain I knew who the killer was SEVERAL times, only to have one theory after another kicked to the curb by the plot, which would take spectacular turn after spectacular turn.

The resulting tale is full of missed connections and choices that led to unfulfilled dreams and futures that never lived up to expectations. The main female character, Greer Collins Sheridan, one of the four teenagers in 1986, had loved Hayes Sheridan all her life but only got him by default. She gets the life she dreamed of, only to face tragedy and the knowledge that she was always his second choice. Hayes follows his parents' plans for his future rather than his dream of becoming a farmer. Troy, who just wanted to get out of Blusummer, gets his wish, but life on death row for a murder he swears he didn't commit was a devastatingly cruel plot twist. Even the attorney, Joaquin, who dreams of winning big in court and is not afraid to put in the work to achieve it, faces a personal roadblock. His attraction to Melrose Reed, the paralegal on Troy's defense team, feels wrong, and as her boss, it is inappropriate as long as they work together. But he hopes with all his heart that after the case is settled, he can finally approach her as a regular man interested in a legitimate romantic relationship.

With its strong and interesting character development and clever, twisty plot, I recommend THE BONE NEST to readers of suspense, mysteries, and thrillers.

Service Dog, #1

by

Jack Heape

Inspirational and informative story of Ruby and Tobys journey from show ring to service dog.

Ruby is the inaugural book in author Jack Heapes new middle-grade series about service dogs, telling the inspirational story of a budding champion show dog and her young handler who discover another calling in their lives as a service dog and a service dog trainer. Readers of all ages will surely find the story informative and heartwarming.

Toby Durham developed a passion for handling dogs in the show ring early and became one of the youngest and most successful handlers in competition. He longs to start and finish his own champion, and he gets that chance with owner/breeder Madeleine Fulbright and a young Irish Setter puppy named Ruby. The story details much of the behind-the-scenes work and commitment involved in pursuing his dream, including the considerations and accommodations his family and parents make to help him realize it.

While this aspect of the plot is awesome on its own, its not the only storyline. When Tobys family moves for his fathers job, one of Tobys new neighbors is Rachel Parker, a girl about his own age who experiences seizures of such an unpredictable nature that she is literally restricted to her own home. A chance meeting and Rubys instinctive actions, which appear to warn Rachel of an impending seizure, changes life for everyone.

Ruby, Toby, and Rachels story is inspirational reading and chock-full of dog care, dog and handler training, and the amazing collaboration between one incredible dog and the humans in her life. I recommend RUBY for readers of middle-grade fiction, especially those who love books about dogs.

The partnership was officially announced during Paper for Waters annual event, where Intown Plumbing owners Brittany and Michael Grose shared their commitment to supporting clean water access for families in need. During the event, Intown Plumbing was honored with the 2025 Corporate Sponsor Award in recognition of their dedication to helping expand clean water initiatives across the Navajo Nation.

Through this new initiative, a portion of proceeds from every whole-home water filtration system, Reverse Osmosis system, or water treatment system installed by Intown Plumbing will be donated directly to Paper for Water for the Navajo Nation in New Mexico. The funds will help support the organizations mission to bring sustainable, life-changing water and sanitation access to communities in need.

Intown Plumbing embodies what it means to serve with purpose, said Deb Adams, Project Coordinator for Paper for Water. Their passion for clean water and their willingness to give back through their business truly make them a partner were proud to work with. Together, were bringing hope and health to families who need it most.

The Navajo Nation is one of the driest areas in the United States. Water is often hauled from as far as 50 miles away to fill residents cisterns, and many families still face significant challenges. Nearly 30% lack access to clean drinking water, and 40% do not have running water in their homes. These conditions show just how urgent the need for reliable water solutions is, and Intown Plumbing is committed to helping make a meaningful difference.

People might wonder why a plumbing company is talking about clean water on a global level, said Brittany Grose, co-owner of Intown Plumbing. The truth is, we share something important with Paper for Water and everyone who supports their mission. We care deeply about water, clean, safe, life-sustaining water for every family.

Founded by Brittany and Michael Grose, Intown Plumbing has built its reputation on honesty, reliability, and making an impact on the community. We like to say were Plumbers with a Purpose, Brittany said. Were not just here to fix leaks or install water heaters. Our goal is to make a difference in peoples lives, both locally and beyond. Partnering with Paper for Water allows us to turn our work into something that creates lasting change.

Through this partnership, Intown Plumbing hopes to help bring clean, running water to more homes within the Navajo Nation while raising awareness about water access issues across the country.

Were thankful and blessed to have the opportunity to serve through our craft, Brittany said. This partnership allows us to turn our passion for clean water into something that truly changes lives.

At Carrollton Regional Medical Center, our pulmonology team is committed to helping patients breathe better and live better. We spoke with Dr. Ala Nijim, Head of Pulmonology, to learn more about her role, the conditions she treats, and how people can protect their lung health.

What Does the Pulmonology Team at CRMC Do?

Dr. Nijim leads a specialized team that diagnoses and treats a wide range of respiratory conditions. Every day, we see patients who struggle with shortness of breath, chronic cough, or fatigue, she explains. Our goal is to help them find relief and improve their quality of life.

Some of the most common conditions treated in the department include:

Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

Pneumonia and bronchitis

Pulmonary hypertension

Sleep apnea and other sleep-related breathing disorders

Post-COVID or post-viral lung complications

From the hospital to the clinic, the care provided is comprehensive and coordinated, ensuring patients receive support wherever they are in their treatment journey.

When Should You See a Pulmonologist?

Dr. Nijim notes that many people dont realize they need to see a lung specialist until their symptoms begin to interfere with daily life. She advises patients to consider scheduling an appointment if they experience:

A persistent cough that lasts more than three weeks

Shortness of breath, wheezing, or chest tightness

Frequent respiratory infections

Sleep disturbances or snoring that interrupts rest

Swelling in the legs or ankles associated with breathing difficulty

The earlier we can identify whats causing breathing issues, she says, the better we can treat it and in many cases, prevent it from worsening.

How Can People Protect Their Lung Health?

Prevention is at the heart of Dr. Nijims approach. She recommends a few simple, but powerful, steps to keep lungs strong and healthy:

Avoid smoking and limit exposure to secondhand smoke or pollutants

Stay physically active to improve lung capacity

Eat a balanced diet to support overall immune health

Get vaccinated, especially for flu and pneumonia

See your doctor regularly particularly if you have asthma, COPD, or another chronic lung condition

Most of us take breathing for granted until it becomes difficult, she reflects. Taking care of your lungs now helps protect your overall health for years to come.

How CRMC Supports Patients Through Recovery

At Carrollton Regional, the pulmonology team takes a collaborative, patient-focused approach. Dr. Nijim shares that they work closely with primary care physicians, cardiologists, and respiratory therapists to deliver well-rounded care. Whether someone needs advanced diagnostics, ongoing therapy, or inpatient support, CRMCs team is ready to support them every step of the way.

Our mission is simple, Dr. Nijim says. We want to help patients breathe easier, recover faster, and return to the activities they love.

But for hundreds of North Texas parents whose children are fighting cancer, the season can bring unimaginable stress hospital stays, mounting bills, and the heartbreaking question of how to keep the lights on while their child fights for life.

According to Wipe Out Kids Cancer (WOKC), one in three local families with a child battling cancer live at or below the poverty line a reality that becomes even more painful during the holidays.

North Texans can help support local families enduring unimaginable stress this holiday season by providing a gift of $33 or more to WOKC before the end of the year at wokc.org/hope.

When your child is fighting for their life, the last thing a parent should worry about is how to keep food on the table or the electricity turned on, said Kris Cumnock, CEO of Wipe Out Kids Cancer. Hope cant take a holiday it is essential to these families who are living a nightmare.

Through its Family Assistance Program, WOKC provides direct, practical relief to families in crisis. The local non-profit has stepped in to meet urgent, real-world needs this year paying for housing costs, groceries, gas and parking, utilities, hotel stays and even helping a family afford a cap and gown while their high school senior underwent treatment.

But as the cost-of-living rises, the need keeps growing. This season, WOKC is asking the community to come together to support every DFW family battling pediatric cancer. Each donation provides meaningful relief that allows parents to focus on what matters most, their childs recovery.

Weve seen families sleeping in their cars in hospital parking lots, Cumnock said. Our message is simple: hope cant take a holiday. Families shouldnt face cancer or hunger, eviction or isolation, alone during the holidays.

In addition to supporting families in crisis, WOKC provides Buddy Bags to every pediatric cancer patient admitted to a North Texas hospital. Each bag is carefully curated to meet the needs of newly diagnosed kids with cancer and their parent(s). The contents of the bag include toiletries, a cozy blanket pillow, dining gift cards for parents, as well as age-appropriate entertainment items for kids, such as an iPad and wireless headphones so patients can FaceTime friends and family or download schoolwork. Each of the bags 40 items has a specific role in easing the transition from home to hospital.

For over 45 years, WOKC has significantly impacted the pediatric cancer space by funding more than $13 million for innovative and novel childhood cancer research projects. The non-profit invests in cutting-edge pediatric cancer research projects.

Since 1980, Wipe Out Kids Cancer has offered comfort and hope to kids with cancer through support programs serving the entire family and funds innovative research leading to new discoveries and treatments in the fight against pediatric cancer. WOKC approach features three primary initiatives:

WOKC funds national novel pediatric cancer research projects that lead to advancements in treatment outcomes. WOKC has significantly impacted the pediatric cancer space by funding over $13 million in pioneering research. This seed money has yielded more than $32 million in grant money from large cancer organizations like the National Cancer Institute. While WOKC is relentlessly searching for a cure, the significance of increased survival rates, less invasive treatments, and prevention of harmful side effects are also reasons why research is critical.

WOKC refers to pediatric cancer patients as Warriors to recognize their strength, resilience, and courage. We know, however, cancer impacts the entire family emotionally, socially, and financially. Thats why our Warrior Family Program is thoughtfully designed to support not just the patient, but every member of the family. The Warrior Parent Socials Program provides date night experiences (i.e., cooking classes, Karaoke, game show competitions, etc.) for groups of parents who are navigating a pediatric cancer journey. This program not only helps couples reconnect (combating the elevated divorce rate for parents of critically ill children), but also helps organically foster peer support systems. The WOKC Financial Assistance Program targets families at or below the poverty line (33% of DFW families who have a child with cancer fit into this category).

Elena Taylor

An exquisitely wrought domestic thriller!

The Haunting of Emily Grace by Elena Taylor is an exquisitely wrought domestic thriller, a genuine page-turner that I was compelled to read from cover to cover in a single sitting. With its emotionally struggling heroine and the isolated modern mansion built into the cliffs on land that local legend claims is cursed, I was hooked from the start.

Emily Grace Turner, a finish carpenter by trade, is contracted to complete the interior work of the End of the World, the Monks Island home of Cameron and Katrina Lang, both renowned professionals in their fields: he is an engineer with several patents to his name, and she is a famed architect. The house was their grande idée, but Katrina suddenly disappeared, and the home had yet to be completed almost a year later. Emily Grace is the third carpenter hired to follow through on Katrinas unrealized plans after the first had also gone missing and the second had suffered a mysterious on-site accident that prevented him from continuing to work. Having just clawed her way out of a two-year depression after experiencing her own devastating loss, this job is a final lifeline to get her back on her feet, and failure to successfully fulfill the contract is not an option. When Cameron Langs estranged daughter shows up at the house for an unplanned visit, odd interactions with the young woman and bizarre accusations begin to poison Emily Graces relationship with her client and threaten her livelihood.

Emily Grace is such a vulnerable and brittle character, who seems only a breath away from spiraling back into her deep grief. You cant help but feel protective of her and hope for her success and healing. Her need for caffeine leads to a friendship that proves crucial in her healing journey and helps her navigate the emotional chaos she encounters. Juniper is her timely ride or die. Cameron Lang is a wealthy and genius engineer, but rumors among some of the islands full-time residents paint him as a suspect rather than a secondary victim of his wifes suspicious disappearance. Hes also a desperate dad trying to make connections with an adult child hes had little contact with during their lifetime. Chloe is Camerons daughter from a previous short-lived marriage and is a piece of work from the get-go. I couldnt help but wonder what her endgame was from the moment of her arrival, and there were hints sprinkled here and there that had my suspicious nature working overtime.

The author begins building suspense from the start, with Emily Graces uneasy ferry crossing from the mainland to Salish Island. (Besides her recent trauma, she has an absolute phobia of deep water.) Either through interactions with the brooding, wet, and grey, secluded setting or successive surreal episodes with Chloe, the tension continues to mount until I couldnt have put the book down if I had wanted to. What results is a complex tale, with several unexpected and surprise factors impacting the plot, and an exciting rush of an eleventh-hour resolution.

I recommend THE HAUNTING OF EMILY GRACE to readers of modern gothic suspense novels and domestic thrillers.

by

Reno Bachman

Patience, preparation, and karma ultimately lead to the showdown between good and evil.

The Boy is a short, gritty Western novella by author Reno Bachman, and it packs a wealth of story and a cinematic atmosphere into its concise pages. Somewhere on the western frontier, a young Black boy, hidden from view, witnesses a white mob erect a cross before his home and set it ablaze. The childs beloved father, widely acknowledged as an accomplished marksman, defends their home, only to be overwhelmed by his attackers and murdered, as the boy is held back from intervening and certain death by an aged stranger. The mob, led by a man named Silas Vane, burns down his home, killing everyone else in the house. The old stranger, a former stagecoach robber turned gold prospector, takes the boy in and teaches him the ways and skills of survival until hes prepared to seek justice for himself and his father.

Readers never know the main protagonists names as they are always referred to as The Boy or The Prospector. The Boy lives a tough life with The Prospector, but he thrives and matures, gifted with the same skills with a gun as his father before him, and as the pair travel, his reputation is made. He is a quiet, dignified, mysterious figure of a man when he catches the eye and affections of a saucy, red-headed white saloon girl in town. The discovery of their liaison is the touchstone for his vengeance.

The story is well-paced and immaculately crafted, with each descriptive word carefully chosen to create clear and evocative images of the settings and action. There is all the grit and sweat and blood and raw emotion of a harsher time, unfiltered by laws or common morality. The author does a great job choreographing the scenes of gunplay, especially during the resulting showdown.

I thoroughly enjoyed every page of this story, leaving me to replay each scene in my head. I recommend THE BOY to readers of Western fiction.

Native flowers require less water and maintenance than conventional landscaping flowers and plants and can better withstand our sometimes extreme Texas climate. Wildflowers also add beauty to the landscape and provide food for wildlife. The Collin County SWCD uses funds raised from projects such as this to support local conservation programs and education within the District.

One-pound bags of wildflower seed are available for purchase at the District office, 1404 N. McDonald Street, Suite 100, in McKinney, now thru early November, or while supplies last. Please call before you come to make sure the seed is in stock at 972-542-0081 ext. 3. September and October are the optimal times to plant these wildflowers, and seeding instructions are available with purchases. Get yours now, while supplies last!

St. Andrew Methodist Church Concert Series Presents "The Poetry of Psalms" - FREE

Composed by Taylor Davis, the piece was commissioned by the Texas Master Chorale for their 40th anniversary and premiered in May, closing out their season

St. Andrew Methodist Churchs Chancel Choir along with a professional orchestra will present The Poetry of Psalms, an original 40-minute work by composer Taylor Davis that weaves together Biblical psalms and secular poetry in a powerful musical conversation. The free concert will take place on Sunday, Oct. 19, 3-4 p.m., in the sanctuary of St. Andrew, at 5801 W. Plano, Parkway.

Commissioned by the Texas Master Chorale (TMC) to celebrate their 40th anniversary, the piece received its world premiere in May with TMC and now comes to St. Andrew with Davis conducting and a professional orchestra drawn from across the DFW metroplex.

When TMC asked me to commission this work, I came up with this idea because I find many of the psalms quite poetic, and I thought pairing a few of them with some of my favorite poems would be unique, said Taylor Davis, creative director of traditional worship and music at St. Andrew. The psalms are poetic at heart, but I did not want to just present 45 minutes of sacred text. I wanted to bring in a modern voice something secular but still spiritual, something that might enhance the psalms.

The 40-minute piece consists of a series of musical pairings each one matching a psalm with a poem.

Almost in a call and response way, the texts volley back and forth, said Davis. For example, the Scottish poem As the Rain Hides the Stars paints a picture of trusting what we cannot see, and its complemented by Psalm 8, describing creation with the sun, moon, and stars of night. This is perhaps one of my favorite pairings: the poem sounds like youre watching fireflies after a summer storm, and the psalm about creation is like a confetti cannon!

In another pairing example, Emily Dickinsons Will There Really Be a Morning? is answered when Psalm 113 declares from the rising of the sun to the going down of the same, the Lords name is to be praised, he continued. Each pairing lasts about four minutes with ten total movements inviting the listener on a journey through doubt, wonder, praise, and gratitude.

The psalms can feel sepia-tonedbeautiful, but distant, said Davis. I wanted to add a little technicolor, and these poems do that. They help us see that sacredness isnt locked away in old texts. Its all around usin everyday language, in the natural world, and in the questions we all carry.

This concert is part of a broader effort by St. Andrew to offer meaningful, artistically excellent programming for the wider community. From classical music lovers to curious first-time concertgoers, The Poetry of Psalms aims to be both accessible and profound.

At St. Andrew, were committed to creating one-of-a-kind opportunities for people to experience beauty and transcendence through music, said Davis. Concerts like this offer exceptional music people can't find outside the Dallas Arts District.

More than just a concert, The Poetry of Psalms is the centerpiece of St. Andrews fall music programming designed to connect with younger audiences, particularly high school and college music students in the DFW area. It also sets the stage for the Chancel Choir to take the concert to Carnegie Hall for an appearance in June 2026.

St. Andrews Music Ministry offerings go beyond performance they invite listeners into spiritual depth, communal reflection, and musical experiences that are transforming, added Davis. Through creative programming and outreach, we aim to connect people of all ages with the church through art. Join us on Sept. 28 for a transcendent musical experience where sacred meets secular and tradition meets innovation.

Marcus Invitational this weekend at North Lakes Park in Denton, the same course where District will be held in October. Running the course early provides valuable experience, but storms forced the cancellation of the JV boys and JV girls races, sidelining about 40 Coppell runners. That left the Varsity squads to lead the way against more than 100 schools, many among the states toughest programs.

Despite the challenging conditions of heat and mud, Coppells Varsity athletes, including Maya Easterwood and Diego Morales, delivered standout performances.

Coachs Highlights on the Cowgirls

In the Elite Varsity Girls race, Coppell finished 13th out of 31 teams. Senior Maya Easterwood dominated from start to finish, winning the race while setting the pace alone at the front. Freshmen Finleigh Sanders-Burk and Rachel Stumm followed as Coppells 2nd and 3rd finishers, both posting mid-19-minute times that exceeded expectations. Anusha Patki and Bishakha Sinha rounded out the top five with strong efforts in their first high school 5K races. Four of Coppells top five finishers were freshmen, a promising sign for the future.

In the Varsity Girls Open division, Coppell placed 29th out of 36 teams. Charlotte Baade led the way for the Cowgirls, with Hannah Stumm and Vanini Agarwal following close behind.

Coachs Highlights on the Cowboys

The Elite Varsity Boys finished 16th out of 43 teams. Senior Diego Morales and sophomore Sam Meier paced Coppell with strong races, while Rohit Kalpathy, Sidharth Kerthipati, and freshman Tyler Kim rounded out the top five. For Kim, it was an impressive debut at the 5K distance.

The Varsity Boys Open team earned Coppells top finish of the day, placing 9th out of 45 squads in a race of 384 runners. Seven Coppell athletes placed in the top 102, led by Itsuki Pena, Vihaan Sahni, Srivanth Rudrangi, Marco Noyola, and Lukas Stumm. Pena and Sahni also ran the 6th and 7th fastest times of all Coppell athletes on the day.

Coachs Perspective

Coach Wren summed up the weekend:

Overall, Im extremely encouraged by what I saw from the athletes that were able to run on Saturday. We have a lot of talented runners that either ran their first 5K ever or their first one in a while. I look forward to continuing to build in practice this week leading up to the Southlake Carroll Invitational next weekend.

Looking Ahead

Next up, Coppell will compete on September 6 at the Southlake 5K Cross Country Invitational. The meet will provide another early-season test for both the Cowboys and Cowgirls as they continue to build experience at the 5K distance. The program will aim to carry its momentum forward and keep improving with each race.

Until next time, Coppell Cross Country will keep pushing forward!

Lately, that growth has brought both opportunity and challenge: its been especially hard to find qualified plumbersas well as electricians, HVAC technicians, and other skilled tradespeople. And were not alonethis shortage is reshaping how projects are staffed and delivered across North Texas.

A Metro on the Move

The DallasFort WorthArlington metro added 46,800 nonfarm jobs over the past year, one of the fastest gains in the country, with construction growth remaining strong (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). Statewide, Texas recorded its sixth straight month of record-high job counts this summer, underscoring continued demand across sectors including construction (Texas Workforce Commission).

That boom is visible everywherefrom new commercial developments in Frisco and Fort Worth to large-scale restoration and retrofit projects after severe weather. But behind the cranes and concrete is a persistent reality: the crews needed to do the work simply arent keeping up with demand.

Why Workers Are in Short Supply

Hiring challenges are widespread. In recent surveys, a large majority of Texas contractors report difficulty filling hourly craft roles, and many cite schedule impacts from those gaps (Associated General Contractors of America Texas results).

An aging workforce. Many experienced tradespeople are retiring without enough new entrants training to replace them (noted across AGC and state labor updates).

Policy headwinds. Local industry leaders estimate recent immigration enforcement has taken roughly 30% of construction labor out of the Metroplex, tightening supply even further (CBS Texas report and CBS Texas interview).

Awareness and training gaps. For years, high school pathways emphasized four-year degrees over career and technical education, limiting the pipeline into licensed trades.

Local Efforts to Build a Pipeline

The good news: DFW organizations are stepping up. In Fort Worth, a mayor-backed initiative is graduating high schoolers with both diplomas and industry certificationscreating direct routes into in-demand jobs (Axios Dallas / Axios newsletter).

Industry groups are investing too. The TEXO Foundation provides scholarships and outreach to help students enter North Texas construction careers (program overview). The nonprofit CIEF North Texas runs design-build competitions and hands-on workshops that expose teens to real jobsite skills (North Texas Giving Day hub).

Corporate partners are contributing as well. Sams Club committed $1.5 million to Dallas-based Big Thought to expand workforce training for young peoplepart of a broader $3 million initiative (Axios Dallas; Dallas Innovates).

Why It Matters for North Texas

Without enough skilled tradespeople, projects slow down, costs increase, and quality can suffer. In a high-growth region like DFW, thats more than an inconvenienceits a risk to the areas momentum. The skyline tells one story, but the real story is on the ground: recruiting, training, and retaining the people who keep projects moving.

Our View from the Field

At Finish Line Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP), we see this challenge every day. Meeting North Texas demand requires collaboration between contractors, schools, nonprofits, and policymakersand a renewed focus on career pathways into the trades. If your organization is exploring partnerships, internships, or training-aligned project work, were ready to be part of the solution.
